Anyone who has lived in or visited Boulder can confirm that this University of Colorado hometown at the foot of the majestic Rocky Mountains has an energetic, outdoorsy pulse unlike anywhere else. Boulderites don&rsquo;t &ldquo;go green&rdquo; like other city residents because they already are &ldquo;green.&rdquo; Recycling, eating organic, biking instead of driving and reducing waste is practically inherent in Boulderites&rsquo; DNA. In fact, Boulder Valley has 300 miles of bike paths, lanes and routes, making it one of the nation's bike-friendliest cities.&nbsp;
And it turns out that bike-ability and happiness share a high correlation, according to a 2017 National Geographic / Gallup study. Researchers compared happiness metrics from multiple metro areas, such as healthy lifestyle habits, access to nature, financial security, education, ample vacation time, feeling productive, civic engagement and even frequency of dental checkups &mdash; and Boulder tops the list! Per capita, more Boulderites walk to work than any other city, and access to nature is a no-brainer in this beautiful community where bouldering, biking, snow sports, hiking, paddling, climbing, boating, paragliding, fishing and camping are steps from your front door. Another factor contributing to Boulderites&rsquo; happiness is puppy love &mdash; literally! Pet ownership and happiness have always shared a high correlation, but Boulder takes its love of pets to another level. In 2000, city officials changed the legal description of pet ownership from pet owner to pet guardian, making Boulder the nation&rsquo;s first city to recognize that pets are not merely objects to be owned, like cars, furniture, homes, etc. In addition, Boulder&rsquo;s Open Space and Mountain Parks is one of the rare municipal park systems that allow off-leash dog walking in most spaces.&nbsp;
Last, who knew that water quality and happiness also share a high correlation (according to the same NatGeo study)? Given that most of Boulder&rsquo;s water comes from melted snow flowing into mountain creeks and rivers, we&rsquo;re not surprised that its water quality is among the nation&rsquo;s top. And, as craft beer fans know, beer brewed from pristine water is noticeably better than traditional city water. Colorado&rsquo;s first craft brewery, Boulder Beer Company, opened in 1979. Soon after, Boulder became a homebrewing and craft brewing epicenter, launching many craft beer-related trade organizations and events like the original Great American Beer Festival. <h1>Charlotte &mdash; Where Brewers, Bands, Artists &amp; Street Food Make Fab Collabs</h1>
When we hear the term Gold Rush, we typically envision frenzied wannabe miners racing across the plains to California&rsquo;s mountains in the mid-1800s. However, it turns out that Charlotte, NC, was the U.S.&rsquo; first Gold Rush site when a 12-year-old boy found a 17-pound chunk of gold on his family&rsquo;s farm in 1799 &mdash; almost 50 years before a California mill construction worker found the gold that ignited the California Gold Rush. The discovery of Charlotte&rsquo;s gold prompted the U.S. Treasury to establish the first U.S. Mint branch in 1835 so that local gold could be minted into coins. Charlotte never looked back and went on to become the U.S.&rsquo; second largest banking center, second only to New York!&nbsp;
Yet, banking isn&rsquo;t Charlotte&rsquo;s only claim to fame &mdash; professional sports reign king here. The Queen City is the proud home of the Charlotte Panthers (NFL), the Charlotte Hornets (NBA) and a brand new major league soccer team, the Charlotte Football club (plus minor league baseball and hockey teams). And Charlotte has something many cities of comparable size lack &mdash; the Charlotte Motor Speedway, which sets the standard for motorsports entertainment and hosts multiple NASCAR events. The NASCAR Hall of Fame calls Charlotte home too. (Fun side note: we can thank Prohibition for the birth of stock car racing &mdash; Appalachian moonshiners needed fast cars and crazily talented drivers who could handle hairpin turns to escape local and federal law enforcement! <h1>Chicago: The City that Likes to Eat &amp; Drink!</h1>
America&rsquo;s third largest city is known for many things &mdash;1920s-era mobsters like Al Capone and John Dillinger, towering skyscrapers, world-class museums, renowned universities and legendary professional sports teams. Although New Orleans holds the title &ldquo;the birthplace of jazz,&rdquo; the Chicago jazz scene caught fire as talented Nola jazz artists such as King Oliver and Louis Armstrong migrated north in the early 1900s. We can also thank (or blame, depending on your music tastes) Chicago for helping kill off disco music in 1979 with an infamous White Sox promotion called Disco Demolition Night. Imagine thousands of energized rock music fans bringing disco LPs to Comiskey Park to be blown up, which ultimately ended in a riot. With disco dying out in the early 1980s, local underground club DJs began experimenting with thumping four-on-the-floor, 120-beats-per-minute tempo music that eventually morphed into a whole new genre called house music.&nbsp;
Chicago also holds the honor of being one the world&rsquo;s top cities for eating and drinking out, according to an extensive study by<a href="https://www.timeout.com/things-to-do/best-cities-in-the-world"> Time Out</a>! The Windy City is renowned worldwide for its foodie scene, and it turns out that some of its best food comes from mobile kitchens. <h1>Colorado Springs &mdash; Unparalleled Scenery, Attractions and Tons of Food Truck Rallies</h1>
Unlike many Rocky Mountain communities, Colorado Springs did not start as a mining boom town (although a settlement existed that supported miners heading west in the mid-1800s). Miners discovered gold here in 1891, but it was decades after the resort town was established. A wealthy Civil War hero and railroad magnate recognized the area&rsquo;s tourism potential, with its nearby mineral springs, breathtaking natural stone structures and majestic Pikes Peak Mountain that soared above the community. The visionary created broad scenic streets, planted thousands of trees and built stately European-inspired buildings, which beckoned to artists, entrepreneurs, the health-conscious, intellectuals, the wealthy and inventors.&nbsp;
One such inventor was Nikola Tesla, a Serbian American electrical engineer and futurist who arrived in 1899 and built a lab (and in case you were wondering if a connection exists between Elon Musk&rsquo;s Tesla, Inc. and Nikola, yes &mdash; Musk named his electric vehicle company after the inventor). We have Nikola to thank for his pioneering work with alternating current (AC) technology. However, the local power company and city residents were not thanking him after an experiment creating 100+&rsquo; high manmade lightning bolts blew out the electrical grid and plunged residents into darkness for days!&nbsp;
That original visionary was onto something because &ldquo;The Springs&rdquo; offers many unique attractions few cities can top. From the otherworldly Garden of the God rock formations to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, the historic Broadmoor Manitou &amp; Pikes Peak Cog Railway, the Manitou Cliff Dwellings, the Cave of the Winds, the legendary Broadmoor Hotel and numerous history, aviation, art and other museums. Thrilling sights are in the sky, too, as fighter jets stream overhead occasionally from the nearby Air Force Academy. In addition, Pikes Peak is one of the few 14,000+&rsquo; mountains you can reach without needing hiking boots &mdash; the Pikes Peak Highway winds up 19 scenic miles to the summit, where you enjoy lunch and unparalleled views from the recently renovated Summit Visitor Center (the cog railroad goes to the summit too). There&rsquo;s a reason why Columbus is a hot spot for national restaurant chains to test new menu items &mdash; Ohio&rsquo;s capital city likes to eat out &mdash; a lot! This Midwestern gem is brimming with a diverse, young, highly educated population, partly due to the Ohio State University Buckeyes and dozens of other colleges that call C-Bus home. Savvy restaurant marketers know that this eclectic mix of residents is willing to try new foods, including our favorite kind: street food. In a city that produced celebrities such as The Food Network&rsquo;s Guy Fieri, fast food chains (Wendy&rsquo;s, Buffalo Wild Wings and White Castle) and a robust mix of ethnic cuisine, this town has a long, delicious relationship with food. Fortunately, fantastic food trucks roam all over this city &mdash; think AJ&rsquo;s Birria Tacos&rsquo; slow-roasted birria, Pitabilities&rsquo; savory gyros, Fork in Nigeria&rsquo;s fried oxtail, Paddy Wagon&rsquo;s smoked brisket and Holy Crepes&rsquo; irresistible Dulce de Leche crepes, to name a few.
When Columbusites aren&rsquo;t eating, they are exploring beautiful parks and cultural attractions like the COSI (Center of Science and Industry), Columbus Zoo &amp; Aquarium, historic German Village and LEGOLAND Discovery Center. Beer lovers will want to traverse the<a href="http://www.cbusaletrail.com/"> Columbus Ale Trail</a>, a group of breweries and tap rooms where you can collect stamps on a &ldquo;passport&rdquo; to earn free beer and swag. <h1>Denver &mdash; Beer, Home Runs and Food Trucks Galore!</h1>
Most of us know Denver&rsquo;s nickname is the Mile High City. And while Colorado was the nation&rsquo;s first state to legalize recreational marijuana, the Mile High City nickname has nothing to do with weed&rsquo;s euphoric effects (at least it didn&rsquo;t initially)! Colorado&rsquo;s capital city earned that nickname because it sits at 5,280 feet &mdash; exactly one mile &mdash; above sea level. If you visit Denver&rsquo;s state capitol building, you&rsquo;ll climb granite steps to the main entrance, including three steps labeled as being at 5,280&rsquo; elevation. The steps are only a few feet apart &mdash; the step height discrepancies are due to different measuring techniques over the decades. Regardless of which step is actually the correct one, the view of the majestic Rocky Mountains from any of the three is spectacular! It&rsquo;s so spectacular that a city ordinance protects the view, prohibiting developers from building structures that block it. The MLB Colorado Rockies&rsquo; home park Coors Field also has an ordinance-protected view &mdash; and one row of purple seats in a sea of green ones that are at 5,280 feet elevation!&nbsp;
Speaking of Coors Field, it has a reputation for being a hitters' field &mdash; baseballs really do travel 5-10% farther here than parks at sea level, resulting in more home runs. The high elevation and semi-arid climate make the air less dense and humid, reducing drag. Pitchers find their curveballs tend to curve less here, also benefitting batters. To compensate for the thin air advantage, Coors Field&rsquo;s outfield fences were placed farther from the home plate, creating MLB&rsquo;s largest outfield. Apparently, that wasn&rsquo;t enough to level the playing field (pardon the pun)! The park later installed a large humidor to store the balls because the humidity makes them a tad softer and slower. And we can&rsquo;t talk about Coors Field without mentioning Coors Brewing, which still uses cold pristine Rocky Mountain spring water to brew beer!&nbsp;
And speaking of beer, beer is arguably Denverites&rsquo; favorite beverage. The Denver metro area is home to roughly 150 craft breweries. And what goes together even better than beer and baseball? Beer and food trucks, of course! Throw a dart at a Denver map, and you&rsquo;re almost sure to land on a craft brewery with a food truck or two parked out front. Coloradoans are practically immune to cold weather and will sit outdoors year-round under bluebird sunny skies, sipping frothy beers and noshing on delicious street food.
<h2>Denver&rsquo;s Food Truck Scene</h2>
Unsurprisingly, in a city that loves craft beer, you&rsquo;ll find tons of festivals and events where craft beer flows. For example, about 40,000 beer lovers flock to Denver each September for the<a href="https://www.greatamericanbeerfestival.com/"> Great American Beer Festival</a> to sample 2,000+ beers from 500+ American craft breweries. (Since the multi-day event occurs indoors at the Denver Convention Center, there&rsquo;s only room for a few food trucks.) What might surprise you is that Denver has a robust arts and culture scene, with excellent museums and performing arts complexes. One of the best ways to experience it is at the year-round<a href="https://denversartdistrict.org/first-friday"> Santa Fe Art Walk First Fridays</a>. This Art District comes alive with thousands of people meandering the streets, studios and galleries and swinging by food trucks such as Chibby Wibbitz Sliderz n Bites, Dos Gringos, DownTown Fingers, Happy Cones and Roll It Up Sushi Truck. Most of us know that Detroit and the American automotive industry will be forever linked, hence its nickname, &ldquo;Motor City.&rdquo; However, we can also thank Detroit for its musical influences on the world, from<a href="https://www.motownrecords.com/"> Motown Records</a>&rsquo; hits from legendary artists such as Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye and The Temptations, to techno music and hip-hop artists like Eminem.&nbsp;
Maybe it&rsquo;s something in the water, but creativity percolates here &mdash; just check out all the street art! Creativity also simmers in Detroit&rsquo;s food truck scene. Despite Detroit&rsquo;s cold winters, Motor City is literally rolling with motor-powered culinary greatness year-round! From music festivals to wine, taco, beer, old-timey cars and St. Patrick&rsquo;s Day parades, the food truck scene is alive and revving.
Some other fun facts about Detroit include its obsession with potato chips. Reportedly, Detroiters consume more addictive salted crispy fried potato slices than any other city. From June to October, food truck fans can find their favorite rolling kitchens at Michigan&rsquo;s biggest daily food truck rally,<a href="https://downtowndetroit.org/experience-downtown/things-to-do/food-trucks/"> Downtown Street Eats</a>, from 11 am to 3 pm, Monday through Friday. With a rotating schedule of 75+ food trucks, there is something to satisfy any palate.
Belle Isle, smack dab in the middle of the Detroit River, is another superb spot to<a href="https://belleislefoodtrucks.com/"> find roaming meals on wheels</a> regularly. The 982-acre park houses numerous cultural and historical attractions and food trucks dish up tasty tacos, fried chicken, burgers, ice cream and sandwiches.

<h1>Fort Collins &mdash; Best of Many Things, Including Bikes &amp; Food Trucks!</h1>
Landing on lists such as &ldquo;Best Places to Live,&rdquo; &ldquo;Best Places to Retire,&rdquo; &ldquo;Most Bike Friendly Cities,&rdquo; and Happiest Cities in the U.S.,&rdquo; Fort Collins has plenty to brag about! While its more famous neighbor to the south, Boulder, ranked #1 on the &ldquo;Happiest Cities in the U.S.&rdquo; in a 2017 National Geographic/Gallup study, Fort Collins ranked #4. However, Fort Collins holds the honor of inspiring a truly happy place &mdash; Disneyland&rsquo;s Main Street USA! The master of creating happy places, Walt Disney, modeled his theme park&rsquo;s Main Street USA after seeing photos of Fort Collins&rsquo; historic, picturesque downtown. Harper Goff, a Disney set designer who grew up in Fort Collins, took photographs of the courthouse, several banks, the firehouse and turn-of-the-century streets, which later became models for many of Disneyland&rsquo;s iconic Main Street USA buildings.&nbsp;
Fort Collins and Boulder share another distinction &mdash; bike friendliness. The two cities are Colorado&rsquo;s only platinum-status ones on the League of American Bicyclists list of bike-friendly communities. Fort Collins takes it a step further, with its hometown school, Colorado State University, being the only platinum-status university in Colorado (University of Colorado, Boulder earned gold status). After all that cycling, residents and visitors often head to the two dozen or so craft breweries in this city nicknamed &ldquo;The Napa Valley of Beer.&rdquo; Aka &ldquo;Fort Fun,&rdquo; Fort Collins brews 70% of Colorado&rsquo;s craft beer, according to some sources. Craft beer lovers know that water quality plays a significant role in beer&rsquo;s taste, and some of the town&rsquo;s biggest breweries, Odell Brewing Company and New Belgium Brewing, get their water from the pristine Poudre River and Horsetooth Reservoir.&nbsp;

Live bands liven up the weekly event, and, of course, your favorite food trucks and mobile vendors roll in and dish up the grub. The biggest challenge you&rsquo;ll encounter as you stroll along the food trucks parked along Sheldon Drive is which one to try &mdash; will it be tacos, BBQ, fried chicken, corndogs, Nepalese dumplings, pizza, sushi, coffee, burgers, kettle corn, burritos, vegan dishes or desserts like ice cream, cookies, shave ice and cupcakes?
