<h1>Los Angeles: The Food Truck OG</h1>
Los Angeles is undoubtedly the hotbed of American pop culture and entertainment &mdash; and arguably the nation&rsquo;s most trendsetting city. From movies to TV, music, fashion, food and just about anything else that falls under the category of &ldquo;new&rdquo; or &ldquo;hip,&rdquo; chances are it started in L.A. So, we should feel no surprise that we have L.A. to thank for the booming American food truck scene! Many U.S. cities have had taco and ice cream trucks roaming their streets for decades, but it was in L.A. where the mobile street food trend caught fire. So, how did the City of Angels become the birthplace of this uniquely social, fun dining experience?
A Korean immigrant and professionally trained chef named Roy Choi deserves some serious props for helping launch the L.A. food truck scene. In 2008, he and a friend came up with the idea of putting Korean barbeque into taco shells, a mouthwatering blend of Korean and Mexican cuisine, and selling them outside L.A. clubs. Thus began the birth of<a href="https://kogibbq.com/"> Kogi</a>, one of L.A.&rsquo;s most successful food trucks to ever hit the streets. Much of Kogi&rsquo;s initial growth was due to a newly developing social media platform &mdash; Twitter. However, one successful solo truck isn&rsquo;t the only reason for the city&rsquo;s massive food truck and mobile catering movement.
In 2010, the first Los Angeles Street Food Fest attracted six times as many people as organizers expected &mdash; 24,000 instead of 4,000! Los Angelenos were ready to embrace the culinary innovation and social opportunities that street food provides. Operating a food truck costs far less than a brick-and-mortar restaurant, allowing talented chefs (many from immigrant families) to blend authentic ethnic family recipes with other cuisines and introduce customers to insanely creative, previously unimagined dishes.
Additionally, eating from a food truck is a highly social activity. We interact with others as we stand in line for food, stroll along a line of trucks deliberating which to try, and eat in communal spaces. Los Angelenos spend a LOT of time in their cars, and traffic jams are no joke here. The street food fad allowed Los Angelenos to finally get out of their vehicles for a change and socialize, furthering mobile vendors&rsquo; popularity. Year-round fantabulous weather doesn&rsquo;t hurt either!
